Bokeh okay???

Photographers have a tendency of coining up strange words, bokeh being one of them. No it was not invented by a guy from terengganu. You know when u see an out of focused picture you see all these round soft things, especially with light? those soft round elements in a picture are called bokeh. Not only is the word bokeh weird enough, you also have ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bokeh.

The word comes from a Japanese word- ‘Boke’, which means ambiguity, unclear and, by photographic association, blur. It refers to the character of the out-of-focus planes in the image-how they are rendered. Below is Abg Azrin, my housemate, now becomes my subject. Click on the picture for the full sized pic.

To be a ‘good‘ bokeh, it has to be a circle increasing in brightness to the centre, it looks like a natural rendering. A bad bokeh is when it has a bright, sharp-edged ring with a dark centre. In the example below, the green circle is considered bad and the red one neutral.
Now u guys can act all professional and say to your other mates, “damn, u got some ugly bokeh there dude…” . Sweet…

abg azrin,
well that depends on your current lighting situation, yes it is possible to get all good bokehs in one picture, but its not necessary, plus sumhow out of our control, it also depends on the lens used, and the aperture at that moment.
