Customize your lens hood!
Yup, peopleĀ said I was crazy, but I did it. I customized my own lens hoods. Why not? I did it with stickers so if you’re gonna sell it, just make sure you clean it up. Simple isn’t it? Now, more than ever before, more and more people are using DSLR’s. And to be frank, there’s not a lot of variety in colour. Now what colours are there? Well let me see, black, dark grey, maybe a dash of red or blue. Anything else? NOPE! I refuse to believe that they’re aren’t photographers out there who doesn’t want even a dash of colour into their life. You gotta stand out from the crowed right? Start with customizing your lens hood.
I got a bunch of OBEY stickers, and randomly positioned them on the hood. Then with a new scalpel blade i basically ran along the side of the hood where stickers were hanging of, slicing them off. The blade is at a 45 degree angle to the hood. Do it in one single clean motion. And repeat to refine it more. Within 10 minutes you’ll be done!
You’ll have random people remembering your lens hood far more better than they remember your face. Just make sure you’re not a stalker and you should be safe ; )
What’s the limit? Your imagination.., and what kind of stickers you have as well. Enjoi_learning.

shamin , can you do an article by your explaination on whut does a hood do ? i see no reason for even having one , wounld’nt a polarized filter be more sufficient with added advantage ?

Well that i know of, especially with wide lenses, hoods are important to reduce flare, unwanted beams of stray light into your lens. You’d still get flare with a filter on no matter what kind. And you dont need a polarizer everytime coz it’ll reduce visibilty through the viewfinder (more dark).

We often listen to podcast from Chris Marquardt and he mentioned that.. “why do you need to put your ‘cheap’ filter in front of your lens?” According to him, the lens itself has been made with expensive glass to produce quality images. Even with the expensive multicoated filter, still you will find a small fraction of light bounce which result a layer on the image.
I’d agree that sometime photographers need it for the sky to look more ‘blue’ that it should. But, here’s a point: Why bother taking a picture that isn’t worth a picture? You just need to wait for the right moment and once the timing is right, you’ll get what you want!
(Besides, the famous 911 call for photographers will come along – the Photoshop!)
Above all, it is the matter of choosing what is best and work for you. But it must comes with a sound understanding and not mere assumption on how things work.
Best of luck all. Customize your hood and share it with us!

hi all.
ehmm try use images.google.com enter keyword "gaffer tape hood"
i heard about this from forum. they said they used gaffer tape coz it's easy to peel off back when u dont need the protection or perhaps selling the hood.

That is why we're here. Some people don't really want to use lens hood but we recommend. With those graphics, eyes on you!
Besides, you just don't include the lens hood if you were to sell your lens
It is yours – the hood, the MASTERPIECE!

Just want to share… if anyone would like to try a DIY lens hood from card board you may go to this site http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/ have a look… maybe a template for lens sticker available there… personally i agree with rafie… using very cheap filters can degrade you picture quality… but me myself sometimes use polarizer or some fisheyes add-on just to try the fisheye effect… i have to tolerate between quality and money…. all in all it was fun…
maybe importance and types of hood can be lensa next topic… =)

Yup, we've noticed this website too. But remember, the size might not fit well with the actual hood (if you were to make is as template) because of the thickness factor
You might get up to 10mm bleed.
Thanks for sharing (and the suggestion on lensa next topic). Cheers!
